Creative Writing Groups and Workshops
Dorothy has led creative writing groups and workshops for over thirty four years. She has worked in schools all over Scotland, in community centres, support centres for adults with mental health difficulties, and has led many workshops covering a wide variety of themes including 'The Geography of the Heart', 'A Crock of Gold' (exploring the relevance of fairy tales to our lives), and 'Letting Go - a celebration of motherhood.' She has also been invited to lead workshops at festivals including the Craigmillar Book Festival, Aye Write! Kingussie Book Festival and Haddo House Arts Festival.
Groups
She led the writing group at Link Up Support Centre for women for fifteen years. and tutored a group for service users in the Royal Edinburgh psychiatric hospital for 14 years. Both these groups produced several self-printed publications and the women's writing group at LInk Up wrote and performed plays for other members of the Centre on subjects as varied as Christmas Eve in a launderette and the story of Persephone in the Underworld. The Royal Edinburgh group took part twice in the SAMHFF, reading in Augustine Church, Edinburgh.
She founded the Young Edinburgh Writers YEW, a creative writing group for teenagers in the city in 2009 and successfully led its twice monthly workshops for five years, before handing it on to another tutor.
Workshops and Readings
As part of the Pentland Book Festival 2020, she read her contribution to the Threads online event in November.
She gave a poetry workshop for the Pentlands Book Festival in November 2019.
In January 2018, Dorothy led a workshop on 'Performing Your Work' for the Write to Recovery Network in Glasgow.
She gave a poetry reading as a local author in the Pentlands Book Festival in November 2017
Dorothy was invited to be part of Haddo House Arts Festival http://www.haddoartsfestival.org.uk in October 2014, working with primary school children and using the beautiful autumnal grounds as a source of inspiration for their writing.
She led a writing workshop for participants at the Care for Carers Open Day in Lochend House, Edinburgh in August 2014.
She ran a workshop for adults in Muirhouse Library, Edinburgh as part of Learners Week 2014.
In March 2014 she spent two days in Uist, Outer Hebrides, giving a school workshop, a poetry reading and a workshop for adults.
Dorothy led a workshop on 'Kennings' (old Norse poems) for a P5 class in Breadalbane Communiy Campus Aberfeldy, as part of the William Soutar launch in October 2013.
She gave a reading and ran a workshop for adults with learning difficulties in Kingussie as part of their first literature festival, 'Turning Leaves' in September 2013.
In March 2013, she facilitated a two and a half hour workshop with 6th year Advanced Higher students in Fortrose Academy, helping them with their creative writing exam folio pieces.
She led a workshop in February in Parkhill Library, Glasgow, for adults with learning difficulties as part of the events in the run up to Aye Write! in April 2013.
In September 2012, she ran three poetry workshops in Aberdeen as part of the city's Creative Writing Festival for 6th year pupils.
In March 2011, she was invited to run a workshop for Edinburgh's Museum in Chambers Street to coincide with their exhibition on Lighthouses.
In 2008 she was Craigmillar Writer in Residence, working in four primary schools in the area and one High school.
She is on the Scottish Book Trust writers' database and is eligible for Live Literature Funding (see: www.scottishbooktrust.com/live-literature)
